Dumping Of Electronic Waste
Specialist international lawyers at Irwin Mitchell are investigating reports of illegal dumping of electronic waste in developing countries such as Nigeria, India and China.
The electronic items are allegedly being disguised as second-hand goods and shipped off to developing countries where is it is sold, scrapped or illegally dumped. UK law states that the waste should be recycled.
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2006 make it illegal to export broken electronic items.
Evidence suggests that the waste can cause health problems if not disposed of correctly, for example cathode ray tubes which are often found in old televisions contain neurotoxins which harm the kidneys and reproductive system.
Thousands of waste electronic items and components leave the UK for Africa every day, despite regulations prohibiting their export. Some of these items will be repaired so that they can be reused but a number are in such poor condition that they are eventually dumped in countries without recycling facilities.
