Product recall - MoisturePlus Contact Lens Solution
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning on the 29th May 2007 alerting health care professionals and their patients who wear soft contact lenses about a voluntary recall of Complete MoisturePlus Multi Purpose Solution manufactured by Advanced Medical Optics.
The company is taking action as a precaution because of reports of a rare, but serious, eye infection, Acanthamoeba keratitis, caused by a parasite. The link between the solution and the infection was identified as a result of an investigation by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Consumers who wear soft contact lenses have been warned to stop using the solution, discard all partially-used or unopened bottles and replace their lenses and storage container.
Acanthamoeba is a microscopic, free-living ameba that is relatively common in the environment. Acanthamoeba keratitis is a local infection in the eye that typically occurs in healthy persons and can result in permanent visual impairment or blindness, with some patients requiring a corneal transplant.
While the infection is not spread person-to-person, it is nonetheless difficult to diagnose and treat. Symptoms include eye pain or redness, blurred vision, sensitivity to light, or a feeling that a foreign object is present in the eye. Symptoms can last anywhere from a few weeks to several months and differ among patients.
The Centre for Disease Control has identified and confirmed 138 cases since January of 2005. Of the 46 confirmed patients interviewed by epidemiologists, 39 patients (85 %) wore soft contact lenses. CDC determined that the risk of developing AK was at least seven times greater for those consumers who used Complete MoisturePlus solution versus those who did not...
Investigators still do not know how the contamination occurred, and that any link to AMO Complete MoisturePlus Multi-Purpose Solution is preliminary.
Just last year, Bausch & Lomb stopped all sales of its Renu Moisture-Loc Cleaner also because of risk of infection.
