Horse kick injuries

A young woman was today awarded £2.1m after horse kick injuries that left her left brain damaged.

Katie Witcombe was injured in April 1996 while helping out at Four Winds Equestrian Centre, near Spalding, Lincolnshire, where her pony, Lady, was kept. Katie, who was 13 years of age at the time of the incident, was in a field trying to catch Lady when another horse called Pandora galloped down and kicked out, striking Katie in the head.

Katie suffered a severe head injury which means she now requires 24-hour care. The money she has been awarded will mean that she can live in her own home, gaining as much independence as possible, near her parents in Spalding.

Liability was agreed at 70% in Katie's favour in 1998 and the amount of damages had now been resolved.
