Expert Opinion
It is incredibly worrying to hear reports of this dog attack, with the extent of the police operation to locate and capture the animal involved raising serious concerns regarding the incident.

"One of the saddest aspects of this incident is that it is simply the latest in a string of very serious dog attacks to occur in recent months, following other cases where people have been seriously injured or killed.

"Officers need to thoroughly investigate this attack to gather as much information as possible regarding what happened and ultimately what, if anything, can be done to prevent the same thing from ever happening again.

"The Government is in the process of introducing new measures to tackle the issue of both dangerous dogs and the identification of owners of such animals. While such steps are very important and welcome, we feel there is still more to be done on this matter.

"For instance, the introduction of compulsory insurance for owners would also ensure that victims of attacks would be able to gain vital financial support as they continue their recovery and rehabilitation from the physical and psychological trauma which is caused by such incidents.

"The huge consequences that attacks have on victims should not be underestimated and it is vital that lessons are learned where possible to improve public safety."
