High Potential Individual Visa
If you have graduated from a top global university and want to live and work in the UK, the High Potential Individual (HPI) visa could be a good option for you to explore.
A HPI allows those eligible to live in the UK for two years (or three years for those with a PhD qualification) and is not directly linked employment or sponsorship.

Key requirements and considerations
Qualification
You must have been awarded an overseas degree-level qualification within the last five years from a university listed on the Global Universities List at the time your degree was awarded.
UK universities are not included on these lists, however, if you have graduated from a UK university and wish to stay in the UK, the Graduate or Skilled Worker visas are popular options to explore.
Ecctis
You must obtain confirmation from Ecctis, an approved Home Office partner, that the qualification is equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree or higher.
Financial requirement:
You have enough money to support yourself during your stay, unless you have been in the UK with a valid visa for at least 12 months.
Visa duration
The length of your visa will depend on your qualification:
- If you are relying on a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, you can be granted permission for up to 2 years.
- If you are relying on a PhD or doctoral qualification you can be granted permission for up to 3 years.
This visa does not lead directly to Indefinite Leave to Remain, i.e., settlement in the UK and cannot be extended, but you may be able to switch into other routes such as the Skilled Worker or Global Talent which do lead to settlement.
Visa conditions
During your stay, you can work in most jobs, or look for work, be self-employed, Volunteer and study (provided your course is not eligible for a Student visa)
Dependants
Your partner and children may also apply with you or join you in the UK, subject to meeting eligibility criteria.
