Responsible Business

Responsible Business at Irwin Mitchell

Our aspiration is to be recognised for the meaningful and lasting impact we create by doing business responsibly, guided by our purpose-led approach and core values, and shaped by the needs of our clients, colleagues, and communities.

To us, this means having a strong culture supported by ambitious strategy to address the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues most critical for our business. It also means building trusted partnerships and working collaboratively to drive positive change.

We understand that a commitment to doing the right thing will in the long-term, create value and enable our organisation to grow in a sustainable and responsible way. It’s because of this that our commitment to responsible business is embedded across our operations, overseen and championed by our Board and senior leaders and outlined in more detail in our Code of Ethics.

We actively measure and report our progress, using a range of external benchmarks and metrics to hold ourselves accountable and continually improve.

Our commitment to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC)

We are proud participants in the   United Nations Global Compact and have committed to its 10 universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption and the framework provided by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

While we recognise that our work contributes to many of these goals, we’ve used the findings from our materiality assessment to identify those most relevant to our business. This helps us focus our efforts where we can make the greatest impact, collaborating with our stakeholders to drive meaningful change. These are:

  • Goal 3: Good health and wellbeing
  • Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth
  • Goal 10: Reduced inequalities
  • Goal 12: Responsible consumption and production
  • Goal 13: Climate action
  • Goal 16: Peace, justice and strong institutions.

Our focus

In FY24, we engaged over 100 stakeholders including clients, suppliers, colleagues, and community partners, to identify the most significant ESG risks and opportunities for our business. This was done through a double materiality assessment, helping us understand both how ESG issues affect our business and how our business impacts the world around us.

From this process, we identified four key focus areas that reflect our responsible business ambitions:

  • Protecting our Planet – reducing the impact of climate change through education, responsible consumption and the provision of sustainable services
  • Driving Inclusion and Wellbeing – improving wellbeing and diversity through our services, values-driven culture and sustainable and inclusive employment
  • Empowering our Communities – reducing inequalities through education, employability, and by widening access to justice
  • Building Organisational Resilience – developing healthy and resilient organisations through a focus on ethical, accountable, and inclusive governance.
