Apprenticeships

Learn from the best and get a career head start with an apprenticeship. We’re a diverse and innovative business, and nothing like the idea of a law firm you might have in your head.

You can become an apprentice solicitor or paralegal, or train to work in business administration, tax, or accounting.

Whatever you choose, you’ll work towards an industry-recognised outcome and develop skills that’ll last you a lifetime.

Applications for legal and non-legal 2025 apprenticeship roles have now closed but please register your interest for 2026 opportunities.

Our Apprenticeships

The different departments that have opportunities will be updated in January 2025.

Earn while you learn

Whether you’re leaving school or changing career, our apprenticeships are a fantastic alternative to studying at university.

You can get straight into work, years earlier and without thousands of pounds of debt. You’ll get invaluable real-life experience working with experts in their fields, along with a guided course of academic training.

Your starting salary: £21,840 or £23,933 in London.

Lauren Mannion joined Irwin Mitchell as an apprentice paralegal in September 2016. She's since moved onto the Chartered Legal Executive apprenticeship and qualified in April 2023 into the Medical Negligence team.

Hear from Lorcan Seery (Apprenticeship Manager) talk about the opportunities that come with an apprenticeship.

Why choose us?

We’re one of the top law firms in the UK and do some amazing work for both businesses and individuals.

Our lawyers are regularly involved in high-profile cases all the way up to the Supreme Court, and our work has even resulted in changes to UK law itself. Read about clients we've helped through the years.

Whether you're working in our legal teams or in one of our supporting areas, you'll play an important part in our success. As well as legal apprenticeships, we often have apprenticeships in Finance, Tax, and Business Operations.

Although we do very important work, we're still a relaxed and friendly place to work. It’s an attitude that comes from our headquarters in Sheffield and has spread to our 16 other locations nationwide. Find out more about life at Irwin Mitchell.

You’ll have our support through every step of your apprenticeship and everyone you work with will be happy to help. You won’t have to wear a suit and tie all the time and you can use flexible working to make your apprenticeship fit around your life. These are just some of the reasons we were named Top Law Firm for Apprenticeships by TheJobCrowd.

It’s also why we’re among the highest-ranking organisations in this year’s Rate My Apprenticeship Top 100 apprentice employers, ranking 14th, (a rise from 93rd in 2021) since appointing a dedicated apprenticeship manager.

Rate My Apprenticeship also ranked us as the highest law firm offering apprenticeships in their Top 100 Employers list.

Apprentice induction

We invite all our new apprentices to attend an annual face to face induction at one of our locations each September. This is a great opportunity for them to meet each other face to face for the first time and helps embed them into Irwin Mitchell.

“I was preparing for the worst and thought that since it is a professional environment with high expectations, that we would just be thrown in, however that was quite the opposite. The induction was great and crucial in helping me to get to know other apprentices, my team/colleagues and the office I work in.” – Current apprentice

“The induction was an amazing introduction to Irwin Mitchell and really secured why this is the firm for me and that I will receive great support throughout my apprenticeship.” – Current apprentice

At our apprenticeship induction in 2023, we spoke to Mark Gilbertson (Head of Talent Acquisition) about apprenticeships at Irwin Mitchell.

Please take the opportunity to listen to a special episode of the 'Irwin Mitchell Podcast' (Episode 70), specifically for those thinking about applying for an apprenticeship. Training Principal Emma Rush is joined by two apprentices to discuss their ‘normal day’, the skills they feel are most important to their roles and why they chose an apprenticeship over university.
