Paralegal Apprenticeship

"I wanted to apply for an apprenticeship at Irwin Mitchell because it is a prestigious law firm that has a reputation for investing in apprentices and supporting them throughout their journey towards qualification. I knew it was an opportunity that I couldn't miss out on."

The programme

Our 24-month apprenticeship gives you the knowledge, experience and qualification you need to start a career as a paralegal.

Paralegals help solicitors prepare cases for trial and progress transactions. This involves creating and organising case files, contacting clients, and performing legal research. Through our paralegal apprenticeship, you'll get hands on experience at one of the UK's most successful law firms. You’ll also learn essential skills through an academic study program. Your exact role will depend on which team you work in – you can work in human rights, family law, personal injury, business law, and more.

What will I study?

The academic part of the apprenticeship is delivered by a dedicated training provider via distance learning.

Your studies will be split into three sections:

  • Law and legal practice
  • Legal research
  • Client care.

You’ll be assessed on the skills and knowledge you display at work and with written exams. See more info about what you’ll study and the work you’ll do as part of your apprenticeship on the BPP website.

How to apply

What are the entry requirements?

You’ll need five GCSEs at grade 9-4 (A* to C or equivalent), including Maths and English. You’ll also need three A Levels Grade C or above (excluding General Studies), or equivalent.

What can I do after my apprenticeship?

We’re always keen to support and progress our employees as this can benefit you and our firm.

You’ll receive a Level 3 paralegal qualification when you finish the apprenticeship. This means that you’re a fully qualified paralegal. As a fully-qualified paralegal, there’ll be lots of opportunities open to you in the legal industry, but many of our apprentices choose to continue their careers with us.

You can start a successful career as a paralegal straight away in your chosen area of law. Or you could improve your qualifications with further study, such as applying for our Chartered Legal Executive Apprenticeship, Solicitor Apprenticeship, or any other roles within Irwin Mitchell.

We also have an information page for parents and teachers. Here, you can access useful resources to find out more about our apprenticeships to see how your child or students will develop.

Apprentice Interview

We asked Luke about his paralegal role in our High Net Worth & International team in London.

Luke Jackaman headshot"I chose the legal apprenticeship route to achieve the ideal balance between academic study and practical experience - learning something on one day and applying it the next. This has accelerated my understanding of the law and has strengthened my confidence to communicate effectively with colleagues and clients alike.

Balancing work and study requires strong time management skills, and I’ve been fortunate to have the support of our university partner, who ensures that there are support channels available for any eventuality.

My first year at Irwin Mitchell has been nothing short of extraordinary. Working in a full-service law firm has allowed me to gain exposure to a diverse range of practice areas, allowing me to harness my interests of alternative practice areas outside of my own specialism in Immigration Law. I have also taken opportunities to travel for company and industry events, which have enriched my professional development and broadened my network." - Luke Jackaman, Paralegal Apprentice, London
