Global Talent – Indefinite Leave to Remain

As explored in our previous articles on the Tech and Arts routes, the Global Talent visa is one of the most prestigious but also one of the most demanding immigration routes available.

The evidential burden is high, the endorsement process is rigorous, and applicants are expected to demonstrate genuine international recognition or exceptional promise in their field.
However, the benefits can be significant, particularly the possibility of qualifying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) also known as ‘settlement’, after as little as three years.
With the Home Office currently considering increasing the general settlement period to ten years under the “earned settlement” proposals, the Global Talent route may soon become even more attractive to applicants looking to secure settlement.
The Global Talent Route
The Global Talent route is designed for leaders or future leaders in academia or research, arts and culture, or digital technology. Applicants must first secure endorsement from a recognised endorsing body, and once endorsed, they may apply for permission to enter or stay in the UK, typically granted for up to five years. The route offers unparalleled flexibility, including the freedom to work without sponsorship, pursue self‑employment, or change employers without notifying the Home Office.
Indefinite Leave to Remain – Continuous Residence Requirements
As with most UK immigration categories, Global Talent visa holders must complete a qualifying period of continuous residence before applying for ILR. The distinguishing feature of this route is its shorter qualifying period for certain applicants.
Individuals may qualify for ILR after three years if they meet one of the following criteria:
- They were endorsed by the British Academy, Royal Academy of Engineering, Royal Society, or UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).
- They were endorsed by Arts Council England or Tech Nation as Exceptional Talent (as opposed to Exceptional Promise).
- They have won an eligible prestigious prize recognised as evidence of exceptional talent.
All other Global Talent migrants must complete five years of continuous residence. Importantly, even if the main applicant qualifies for accelerated ILR, their dependent partner and children must still complete five years.
Absences From the UK
To qualify for ILR, applicants must ensure they have not spent more than 180 days outside the UK in any rolling 12‑month period during their qualifying period. However, Global Talent applicants endorsed by the Royal Society, Royal Academy of Engineering, British Academy or UKRI benefit from a key concession: absences linked to work undertaken as part of their endorsed field (for example, overseas research or academic engagements) do not count as absences for ILR purposes.
Financial Requirements
Unlike the Skilled Worker or Partner ILR routes, there is no minimum earnings threshold for Global Talent ILR. However, applicants must demonstrate that they earned income tied to their specialist field during their residence in the UK. This can be evidenced through payslips, employer or accountant letters, grant documentation, or other verifiable sources of income. The Home Office allows flexibility here, provided the earnings can be clearly linked to the applicant’s recognised field of expertise.
Additional ILR Criteria
Applicants must also meet the standard ILR requirements, including:
- English language ability at B1 level or higher (via a SELT, a qualifying degree taught in English, or nationality from a majority English‑speaking country).
- Completion of the Life in the UK Test, which assesses knowledge of British history, culture and traditions.
How We Can Help
With the Government’s Earned Settlement Consultation having closed on 12 February 2026, it appears increasingly likely that the baseline ILR qualifying period for most routes will soon rise to ten years. If implemented, this change could significantly elevate the importance and value of the Global Talent route for eligible individuals seeking a faster path to settlement.
