Are There Compensation Schemes For The Victims Of Terror Attacks?

Terrorist attacks on UK soil have thankfully been very rare in recent years when compared with parts of the rest of the world, and as such this means the main compensation scheme for survivors and victims is focused on helping those who were injured in attacks that took place abroad.

Since 2012, the government has operated the Victims of Overseas Terrorism Compensation Scheme, which supports the victims of terrorist attacks, as well as their families. The scheme doesn't necessarily cover all incidents of terrorism, but if you've been the victim of a terrorist attack abroad since 27 November 2012, you may be able to claim. Although you can make a claim through the scheme on your own, it can help to have legal representation that has experience with claiming and appealing any decisions you disagree with – find out more about claiming after a terrorist attack that took place abroad.

If you were injured in an attack in the UK, then you may be able to make a claim through the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA). This is a government body set up to support blameless victims of violent crime in England, Wales and Scotland, including terrorist attacks.
