A good tattoo artist should follow certain health and safety regulations to safely apply tattoos to customers. 

Here’s what you should expect from any tattoo artist: 

• A medical questionnaire to find out if you have any allergies or health problems 
• They should display a health and safety certificate 
• Advice on how to take care of your tattoo after it’s applied 
• A new sterile needle must be used on every new customer 
• The tattoo artist should wash their hands before tattooing you and wear gloves.

If a tattoo artist tattoos an underage person, they are responsible and not the person requesting the tattoo. 

A tattoo artist should request identification before tattooing anyone. If they don’t, this  can be considered negligence, and you can make a claim against them. 

If you have suffered negligent treatment, you should get medical attention as soon as possible. 

You should also: 

• Take clear photos of your injuries 
• Record details of consultations you had with the tattoo artist before and after you had the tattoo done 
• Keep the original artwork of your tattoo 
• Keep any receipts from the tattoo artist to help us confirm where your injury took place.
