Irwin Mitchell appoints Laura Weir as Partner in Cardiff medical negligence team

Experienced maternity specialist strengthens Wales team

09/07/2026

Irwin Mitchell has strengthened its market leading medical negligence practice with the appointment of Laura Weir as a Partner in its Cardiff office.

Laura joins the firm from Lanyon Bowdler with extensive experience in complex clinical negligence claims, particularly those arising from failures in maternity care. A fluent Welsh speaker, she brings a deep understanding of the Welsh healthcare system and will work closely with clients across Wales and the border regions.

Irwin Mitchell recently expanded its Cardiff office taking new space at Temple Court on Cathedral Road after a successful launch in 2022.

Laura has had a leading role in progressing claims arising from the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust maternity scandal – the largest maternity scandal in NHS history – and has already secured admissions of liability in a number of cases.

Laura has also played a key role in developing an innovative pilot scheme alongside NHS Resolution designed to manage the large volume of maternity claims arising from the Trust in a more efficient way and to help families achieve timely access to justice. Alongside her casework, Laura is a strong advocate for safer maternity care and regularly supports campaigning activity.

She is ranked as a Next Generation Partner in the 2026 edition of Legal 500 and has also been named in The Lawyer’s Hot 100 as one to watch in the medical negligence space.

Laura, who trained at Irwin Mitchell originally, said:

“Irwin Mitchell’s reputation as the market-leader in medical negligence is built on strong client outcomes, collaboration and a clear commitment to patient safety. Returning to the firm gives me the opportunity to contribute to that work while helping to grow the practice in Wales.”

Lisa Jordan, Managing Partner for Medical Negligence at Irwin Mitchell, added:

“Laura is an excellent addition to the partnership, bringing both deep technical expertise and a thoughtful, client focused approach. She strengthens our ability to support families affected by the most serious care failings and to play a constructive role in improving maternity care more broadly.”

Irwin Mitchell’s recent Maternity Safety report identified several recommendations the NHS could implement to improve care in light of the various ongoing investigations and reviews taking place across the country.
