Coverage Highlights Terrible Impact Of Condition
Recent TV documentaries and shocking news stories have highlighted the huge impact that tinnitus can have on lives and why everything must be done to protect people from the dangers, a lawyer at Irwin Mitchell has urged.
A huge number of people are affecting by tinnitus and noise-related hearing loss as a result of loud music, with the issue being put in the spotlight by the Channel 4 documentary series Embarrassing Bodies which featured XFM DJ Eddy Temple-Morris.
He revealed how he suffers from ringing in his ears and also that many other fans and people in the music industry face the same issues.
The documentary came as reports also revealed how 52-year-old Robert McIndoe stabbed himself to death after enduring insomnia caused by tinnitus which he suffered after going to see rock band Them Crooked Vultures.
Lawyers at Irwin Mitchell act for people who have suffered serious hearing problems as a result of exposure to loud noise in the workplace, including people left with tinnitus after employers failed to provide them with adequate protection.
Louise Scott, a specialist in such cases who is a trained tinnitus advisor and committee member for the Birmingham & District Tinnitus Group, said: “Recent media coverage around the issue of tinnitus demonstrates how so many people can be affected by the problem, as well as the devastating impact that such a condition can have on sufferers.
“It is vital that a continuing effort is made to raise awareness of the issue and, more importantly, what can be done from the outset to protect people from the potential risks that loud noise can pose.
“We also hope that recent news on this issue highlights to employers in all working environments, including those in the music or entertainment industry, how important it is to make the health of their workers a top priority by providing equipment which will reduce the impact loud noise can have.”
