Contaminated Blood Claims
Blood transfusions are essential for treating significant blood loss due to trauma, surgery, or conditions such as haemophilia. However, if the blood product used is contaminated or of the wrong type, the consequences can be life-altering.
If you’ve received negligent treatment during a blood transfusion or been given a contaminated blood product, our specialist lawyers may be able to help you claim compensation.

Infected Blood Compensation Authority (IBCA)
The Infected Blood Compensation Authority (IBCA) is a government organisation established to compensate individuals with claims arising from the use of NHS supplied blood (or blood products) and which fall in scope of its criteria. Individuals eligible under the IBCA scheme can access free legal assistance from panel firms appointed by the IBCA. This route may be suitable for those directly or indirectly affected by contaminated blood products and who meet the IBCA’s eligibility requirements.
If your circumstances fall outside the scope of the IBCA scheme, you may be better placed to pursue a civil claim for compensation. Irwin Mitchell has extensive experience in handling complex contaminated blood cases and can assist you with this process.
Civil claims are handled independently of the IBCA scheme and follow the standard legal process. Legal fees will apply, and we’ll provide clear advice on funding options, including whether a No Win No Fee arrangement may be available.
