Support for partner of woman who took her own life despite seeking medical support
We helped Rompert get financial support after several medical failures led to his wife, Victoria, very sadly taking her own life.
What happened to Victoria?
For a year and a half, Victoria presented at her GP and A&E with mental health difficulties.
She received an appointment with the Defendant to discuss her mental health. The Defendant diagnosed her with depression and discharged Victoria back to her GP.
Despite warning signs of significant mental health difficulties with limited action being taken, sadly, six weeks after this appointment, Victoria took her own life.
How did Irwin Mitchell help Rompert?
Rompert came to our medical negligence team to get answers and get compensation for the failures that led to his wife’s death to help support his family.
Emma-Jayne Rudland, a Solicitor in the team, helped Rompert succeed in a claim against the Defendant medical professionals.
The team started by investigating whether there was a breach of duty by the Defendant. This was in relation to the failure to adequately check her history during the appointment and had this occurred, Victoria would have been diagnosed with psychosis rather than depression.
Our team also investigated what the appropriate action would have been after the correct diagnosis.
Settling the claim
Despite not admitting the breach of duty, the Defendant was open to settling the claim. After discussing this with Rompert, it was decided that this was the best option.
In a solicitor-only joint settlement meeting, Emma settled the claim for a substantial six-figure amount.
This money will help Rompert with funeral expenses and make sure he can access any support he needs. He will also be able to support his children and grandchildren in the future.

Expert opinion
On Rompert’s claim, Emma said:
“Victoria was failed by the Defendant, who acted negligently when reviewing her condition.
“With the correct diagnosis and subsequent care, Victoria may not have taken her own life.
“Rompert and his family have to now live knowing this, but we hope the compensation will help them get the support they need, as well as provide for their future.”
