Biography
I joined Irwin Mitchell from BDO LLP, where I spent twelve years as a Tax Principal. Before this I spent time at top accountancy firms including Ernst & Young and KPMG.
I have over 20 years' experience advising high net worth individuals in respect of their UK personal tax affairs. This includes international and offshore tax issues for such individuals, their structures (trusts, offshore corporates) and their businesses both in and outside of the UK.
It also includes advising entrepreneurs, wealthy families and owner managers on all tax matters which impact them from remuneration extraction, business succession and exit strategies (sale of businesses, leaving the UK etc). In addition to advisory services, I also manage tax compliance and reporting obligations for my clients.
I have focused on advising non-domiciled individuals based in the UK on investment structuring, remittance planning strategies, tax efficient trust and corporate structures to assist in creating and maintaining family wealth. In addition non-UK individuals in respect of their UK connections (ownership of UK business assets and property).
What Inspired You To Get Into Law?
Although I read Law at University, I am not a lawyer and have always worked in accountancy/professional service firms. That said, my career to date has been advising on UK tax law and the tax accountancy (tax return compliance and reporting) and this is an important part of my role at Irwin Mitchell.
At Irwin Mitchell there is the unusual opportunity to advise clients on both the tax accounting and legal aspects of their affairs all within a law firm which offers them core personal legal services.
What Is The Most Rewarding Aspect Of Your Role?
I enjoy building strong lasting client relationships where the client views me as their trusted advisor. Understanding the client's personal and commercial circumstances enables me to work with them to develop practical solutions and truly problem solve.
What Do You Do Away From The Office?
I am a keen skier and golfer but much of my time is spent running around after my two young children. My real passion is football and supporting Liverpool Football Club, hopefully the good times are now back!
Publications
I have contributed to the Law Society's new Inheritance Tax Planning Handbook. The handbook is edited by Irwin Mitchell's John Bunker, with contributions from colleagues across our Tax, Trusts and Estates, Corporate, and Wealth Management teams.
Testimonials
"Ashley Hill, a partner in private clients is an exceptional tax adviser, being both technical and highly commercial in his solutions. Clients, and particularly those that could be classed as “tricky” are always happy to work with Ashley as he is able to cut through the complexity with straightforward language whilst also being highly personable and approachable. Ashley is the reason I have referred clients to Irwin Mitchell." - Legal 500, 2022
