Medical Negligence
Sheffield

Chambers and Partners
I’m a partner in the Group Actions team, based in Sheffield. We work with clients across the UK, handling everything from more straightforward claims to complex, high-value cases, always with a focus on getting the right outcome for those who’ve been affected.
My work centres on group actions, involving situations where many people have been impacted in similar ways. This includes claims arising from medical negligence, as well as defective products such as medical devices, consumer goods and vehicles. I understand how overwhelming it can feel when something has gone wrong, especially where many people have been affected by the same problem, and I aim to bring reassurance alongside strong representation to every case.

There’s no typical client I work with, as anyone can be affected by medical negligence or a defective product.
I enjoy working with clients from different backgrounds and trying to ensure I understand their individual needs, so my team can provide a service tailored to their circumstances.
I was on the claimants’ steering committee for several group actions arising from metal-on-metal hips. I worked closely with the lead solicitors and other steering committee members to co-ordinate the evidence, as well as preparing for and being involved with the trial in the Pinnacle Litigation (Gee & Others v DePuy International Ltd).
I’ve successfully resolved many claims arising from contaminated human growth hormone, helping to recover more than £20m in compensation for the families of those who died because of iatrogenic CJD.
I’m the lead solicitor for the NexGen Litigation, arising from alleged defective knee implants. This involves co-ordinating the litigation on behalf of all claimants, as well as representing claimants who have instructed my firm.
I have significant experience of group actions arising from medical negligence and setting up Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) processes to help manage large groups of cases without needing to go to court. This currently includes claims arising from treatment by:
I also have expertise relating to statutory inquiries and have represented former patients and their families at the Shipman Inquiry (public inquiry relating to the crimes of Harold Shipman), the Neale Inquiry (modified private inquiry relating to gynaecologist Richard Neale), and the Thirlwall Inquiry (public inquiry relating to the crimes of Lucy Letby).
Clients are supported from the outset, and the usual starting point is gathering relevant information such as medical records. I use my expertise to identify the issues at an early stage so we can focus on the key elements of the claim, seeking opinion from leading independent experts where needed.
Clients are also supported by our support and rehabilitation co-ordinators and welfare benefits teams, which can offer invaluable help while investigations are being completed. This can be particularly important in the type of claims I deal with, where liability is often disputed and it’s usually difficult to obtain interim payments at an early stage of a case.
The first meeting is an important opportunity for us to start building a clear understanding of your case and the circumstances surrounding it. It allows me to gather the key information I need so that I can quickly assess whether we can help and identify the most effective way to investigate your claim.
I can meet you at your home, in hospital, in one of our offices, or remotely via phone or video call – whatever is easiest for you. I’ll answer any questions you may have and address any concerns.
During our discussion, I’ll explain the process in straightforward terms, outline the steps involved in the initial investigation, and highlight any challenges we’re likely to face. I’ll also talk through how we can work to overcome those challenges and what options may be available to you.
Providing clear, honest and realistic advice from the outset is something I always strive to do. I’ll make sure you have a clear understanding of likely timescales, what to expect at each stage, and any immediate actions that may be needed. My aim is to ensure you feel informed, supported and confident about the way forward from our very first conversation.
