New leadership for Irwin Mitchell’s North-East Family Law team

18.12.2025
Law firm Irwin Mitchell has announced new leadership for its family law team in the Northeast as two former Silk Family Law founders plan to retire next April.
Silk Family Law was acquired by Irwin Mitchell in 2024 and has since been integrated into the full-service firm’s brand.
Partners Ian Kennerley and Kim Fellowes are now planning their retirement from legal practice in Spring 2026 with fellow Partner and Silk alumni Wayne Lynn taking over leadership of Irwin Mitchell’s 20-strong family law team in Newcastle and Aske.
Wayne has over 30 years' experience in advising in all areas of family law, with a particular specialism in representing clients who have complex and high-value financial arrangements.
Irwin Mitchell has the largest family law team in a full-service firm and is ranked in the top tier of several independent guides to the best lawyers including Legal 500, Chambers UK, Spear’s Directory and ePrivateclient.
The family law team in Newcastle which works out of a central Newcastle office overlooking St James’ Park and a discreet office in Aske in North Yorkshire, are specialists in dealing with complex financial issues, including business assets, farming businesses, trusts and pensions. Their clients include high-net-worth individuals, rural landed estates, business owners, sports personalities, people in the public eye and those who hold assets internationally.
Expert comment
Ian Kennerley said: “When we sold Silk Family Law to Irwin Mitchell we knew that we were entrusting our clients with a top tier family law service, with the added capability of a full-service firm. Now that Silk is fully integrated into the Irwin Mitchell business it’s time to hand over the reins in the North East to our excellent colleagues and step back from day-to-day legal work.
“Kim, Margaret Simpson and I worked alongside Wayne for many years and I’m very proud to be handing over to Wayne. I am confident that the team will go from strength-to-strength under the guidance of the wider Irwin Mitchell leadership, with Wayne at the helm here in Newcastle.
“After 42 years of practice in the law, with many long days and short nights, I am looking forward to focusing entirely on my family and applying my mediation skills to resolving the disputes between my four grandchildren.”
Kim Fellowes said: “We have been at the forefront of complex family law in the Northeast for more than a decade, as Silk Family Law and now Irwin Mitchell. I am very proud of what Silk achieved. Having established the firm as a top tier practice with a nationwide reputation, it is time to leave our former Silk colleagues and our Irwin Mitchell friends to grow the team and to continue the excellent work that Irwin Mitchell undertake. I am looking forward to spending extended time with my family and will watch the growth of the team from the comfort of retirement.”
Clare Wiseman, head of family law at Irwin Mitchell said: “We wish Ian and Kim all the best as they move into retirement. Following the integration of Silk Family Law, they leave our family team in the Northeast in good hands. We are the top ranked team in the region and we are looking to grow our private client teams further in Newcastle and Aske over the next 12 months. Under Wayne’s leadership we know our clients will see the same high level of service they have come to expect from Irwin Mitchell.”
