Product Liability Experts Contacted By Women Affected By Health Issues Linked To Device
Product liability experts at Irwin Mitchell have been contacted by a number of women who are concerned that their health has been negatively affected after being fitted with a contraceptive implant manufactured by Bayer.
The Essure device has attracted more than 5,000 complaints made to US regulatory body the Food and Drug Administration. In the UK, the Medicine and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is investigating similar concerns.
In 482 cases in the US, patients said the device had migrated to elsewhere in their body while 259 reported the device breaking.
A study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), conducted by experts from Cornell University in New York, said women who have the device have a 10 times higher risk of needing another operation, than women who had received conventional sterilisations.
The Essure device offers an alternative to more traditional sterilisation by blocking the fallopian tubes and is marketed as being less invasive to have installed.
A number of women who have experienced health issues after receiving an Essure implant have instructed expert product liability experts at Irwin Mitchell to investigate the link between the device and their health issues.

Expert Opinion
We’ve been contacted by women who have suffered problems after receiving an Essure implant to investigate the problems they have experienced. Although their legal cases are in the early stages we are concerned about what we have heard.

“Essure was marketed as a less invasive form of permanent birth control so patients who have used it are likely to be very concerned by these reports. It’s vital that everything possible is done to ensure that patients get the right support on this matter and anyone with concerns should seek advice as soon as possible.
