Trainee Solicitors Teach At Bradford School
Volunteers from law firm Irwin Mitchell have been teaching economics classes at Bingley Grammar School in Bradford as part of a scheme run by the Young Enterprise Education Programme ‘to inspire and equip young people to learn and succeed through enterprise’.
Seven trainee solicitors shared their experience with young teenagers from Year 8 on 17 and 18 March about the fundamentals of business finance and the skills needed through interactive workshops.
Jane Horton, Partner at law firm Irwin Mitchell in Leeds, said: “We are delighted to be part of this project. Encouraging young students to think about current money matters and enterprise gives them a head start when approaching a business environment in the future. I wish I had had this sort of input from businesses in the ‘real world’ when I was at school.”
Kevin Donnelly from Young Enterprise said: “This is part of a Nationwide initiative we are running in primary and secondary schools up and down the country. We have been encouraged by the response of companies to volunteer their staff in firm time to support us. Irwin Mitchell is a long term supporter of the Young Enterprise initiative and is a great asset to all the schools taking part. Any schools, companies or individuals wishing to get involved can find more details on our website www.young-enterprise.org.uk”.
Seven volunteers from Irwin Mitchell who are currently on their trainee solicitor programme spent the day with Year 8 classes. Those involved are Liam Freeman, Chris Robinson, Natalia Rushworth-White, Chris Widdison, James Hemming, Wesley Blackburn and Katie Norman.
Katie commented: “We prepared interactive exercises to communicate cash and debt management and provided guidance on decision making and time management as well as working out ways to help them consider interview and presentation skills. It was a really enjoyable and useful experience for all the staff involved as well as the pupils.”
