Baroness Amos' Maternity Review Report Highlights 748 Recommendations To Improve Care
The latest report by Baroness Amos, who is heading up an investigation into maternity care across England, has revealed that the NHS has recorded almost 750 recommendations of how to improve care from the past decade.
The latest update from The national maternity and neonatal investigation (NMNI) shared Baroness Amos’ first views after vising seven NHS trusts, speaking to some of the families affected and meeting with hospital staff.
She has described that the scale of unacceptable care that women and families have received and continue to receive, as well as the tragic consequences for their babies, took her by surprise.
The report highlights a number of issues that have been repeated shared with Amos including women not being listened to, not being given the right information to make informed choices about their care, and discrimination against women of colour, working-class women, younger parents and women with mental health problems.
Medical Negligence
Sadly, these are also issues we see on a daily basis when supporting families through their medical negligence claims following poor maternity care.
High-profile maternity scandals stretching back decades from Morecambe Bay to failings at Shrewsbury and Telford hospitals and East Kent hospital trust have all pointed to widespread and deep-rooted problems nationally.
The latest announcement by Baroness Amos that nearly 750 recommendations relating to maternity and neonatal care have been made, many of which over the last decade, is truly staggering.
For a number of years we’ve maintained that many recommendations from previous reports and investigations haven’t been fully implemented, missing crucial opportunities to improve patient safety, learn from mistakes and prevent harm to patients in the first place, which is the best way to improve healthcare.
Baroness Amos’s comments and initial findings are a sobering reminder of systemic failings and a critical opportunity to drive long-overdue improvements.
Behind each person we represent is a human story of how families have been devastated by maternity issues. We once again call for decisive and lasting action to improve maternity safety nationally. Families receiving the best care and support needs to be the norm, not poor care and preventable harm.
