Lawyer’s Concern As Police Investigation Into Alleged Medical Negligence At Brighton’s Royal Sussex County Hospital Expanded To More Than 100 Cases

I’ve read with increasing concern the news about the widening of the police investigation into alleged medical negligence in the general surgery and neurosurgery departments at Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

A police investigation was launched in June 2023 after two whistle-blowers made allegations about patient safety.

The allegations included that, University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust, which runs Royal Sussex County Hospital, failed to properly investigate deaths, near misses, and learns from mistakes.

Police have now widened their review to include more recent cases than those previously identified. The concerns are now believed to involve alleged mistakes in the treatment of more than 100 patients from 2015 and 2021, including at least 40 patients who sadly died.

Medical negligence lawyers supporting patients and families

Irwin Mitchell continue to represent families with concerns about the care they received at hospitals run by the Trust and is working to establish whether any of its clients are linked to the investigation.

As a specialist medical negligence solicitor, I sadly see the devastating consequences families can be left to face following care issues. If issues are identified during the course of the police investigation, my hope is that appropriate measures are taken to uphold patient safety and ensure lessons are learned.

In the meantime it’s crucial that patients are supported at this difficult time, not only to receive the answers they deserve, but where appropriate, access to the specialist support and rehabilitation they may require.

It’s imperative that the police be allowed to continue investigating unhindered.
