Biography
I specialise in both personal and business UK immigration law and have experience in:
- Skilled Worker applications
- Sponsor licence applications for Skilled Workers, Global Business Mobility and International Sportsperson organisations
- Assisting with Sponsorship Licence Compliance Audits, including with Educational sponsors
- Global Talent applications
- Partner applications
- Fiancé applications
- Settlement and Naturalisation applications
- EU Settlement Scheme applications.
I advise top-level business clients and complex personal clients and have a particular interest in Global Talent and sponsorship cases.
I am a co-convenor of ILPA’s Yorkshire and North East Working Group and write articles for Free Movement and Global Business Mobility Lawyer, as well as provide commentary for Lexis Nexis.
I have also presented a number of webinars including co-presenting sessions on sponsor licence downgrades, suspensions, and revocations at the annual ILPA Sponsorship Law Conference and presenting “The Skilled Worker Route & The Sponsorship System” for MBL Seminars.
Key Highlights
- I led a Global Talent endorsement application for a designer specialising in 'e-fashion'. I strengthened the case and argued that designing outfits for the meta universe was an innovative interpretation of ‘fashion’. This was approved.
- I led a Global Talent endorsement application for a director specialising in interactive films that were often considered games. I strengthened the case and argued that interactive film was still part of the remit of the film and TV category. This was approved.
- I acted for a client in a rare example of pre-settled status being curtailed. I argued that domestic violence caused a change in circumstances and the applicant should meet the requirements of the EUSS in his own right. The Home Office withdrew the curtailment.
- I assisted in a high-net worth applicant in a naturalisation application who had extensive absences that may have led to a refusal. I collated evidence that the absences were an unavoidable part of his high-profile corporate role. The application was approved within normal processing times.
- I have led mock audits at independent private school sponsors to help assess their procedures and processes, review their student files and advise where their compliance can be improved.
- I have provided assistance in a number of significant university sponsors, including reviewing student files and university compliance and contributing to legal advice as to how their compliance can be strengthened.
- I have provided assistance in a Windrush case, arguing that someone in the UK for over thirty years had the correct permissions. This was approved.
What inspired you to get into law?
Whilst I was studying, I led a campaign for the university to provide scholarships for asylum seekers. This was successful, and during the campaign I became immersed in the legal conundrums that were facing both asylum seekers and the university and wanted to learn more.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your role?
Knowing that you have made a huge difference to someone’s life is always a positive, whether it is helping someone start a dream job, helping keep a business running or resolving years of immigration issues.
What do you like about working at Irwin Mitchell?
Working with a diverse group of like-minded and enthusiastic people.
What do you do away from the office?
I spend most of my time chasing my two little boys around, but when I get a chase, I love playing football and watching Tottenham Hotspur. I am also a huge fan of my hometown Margate, and will talk about it to anyone who will listen!
