John Bunker, a Consultant Solicitor and Chartered Tax Adviser at Irwin Mitchell, has been nominated for a Certificate of Merit by the Chartered Institute of Taxation in recognition of his long-standing contribution to tax policy and simplification.
The nomination was “wholeheartedly endorsed by the CIOT Council” and recognises John Bunker’s service to the Private Client (UK) Technical Committee, where he has been a member since 2015 and previously served as chair for four years.
The award also acknowledges his continued involvement in meetings, consultations and correspondence with HMRC and the Office of Tax Simplification, particularly in pushing for greater simplification of the tax system.
The CIOT Certificate of Merit recognises individuals who have made a significant contribution to the charity’s public benefit requirement and aims. Its criteria include demonstrating professionalism and integrity, helping build public trust and confidence, supporting education and ethical standards, and setting a high standard within the profession.
John Bunker said: “I’m delighted to have been given this award and grateful to the CIOT Council for its endorsement.
“Tax can be hugely complex for individuals, families and advisers, so anything that helps simplify the system and build confidence in it is important. It has been a privilege to contribute to that work through the Private Client (UK) Technical Committee and engagement with HMRC.”
At the event, CIOT highlighted John’s contribution to the profession, saying:
"Recognition for John’s outstanding contribution to the profession and to CIOT. He has dedicated many years to championing a simpler, fairer tax system, through his leadership of the Institute’s Private Client Committee and his influential engagement with policy makers, HMRC and fellow professional bodies.
“Through his expertise, tenacity, commitment and collaboration he has driven meaningful improvements to Inheritance Tax, trusts and estates, leaving a lasting impact on the profession and the taxpayers we serve.”
Andrea Jones, National Head of Private Client Advisory at Irwin Mitchell, added: "We are delighted to see John's valuable contribution recognised in this way."
