I am a Senior Associate solicitor and have acted for clients in the field of serious injury for over 13 years.
I handle a wide range of serious injury cases. These include brain and spinal injuries, amputation and fatal accident claims. I also act for clients who have suffered complex orthopaedic injuries, including children and the elderly. I’ve also worked on professional negligence cases against other solicitors. These arise from badly handled personal injury claims.
I am part of the leading personal injury team in Manchester which has secured excellent results for many clients over the years.
"Very tough-minded and keen to achieve the best possible outcome for clients, with a great eye for detail." - Chambers & Partners, 2019
"Excellent" - Legal 500, 2018/19
Matthew has "an excellent rapport with his clients" - Legal 500, 2017
"Sensitive to the needs of the wider family, who sometimes almost get ignored in the rush to make sure the client gets the right thing." - Chambers & Partners 2014
My interest in law came from my father's work as a GP, assisting in preparing regulatory or disciplinary cases for General Medical Council hearings. This and my interest in investigating cases led me to explore a career in law. Being keen to use my medical interest, when combined with a desire to help those who have been seriously injured, the result was a career in personal injury law.
The most rewarding aspect of my role is seeing the benefit to my clients that the law can provide when they have been seriously injured. This can be in the form of financial compensation, but mainly it is in seeing the positive effects rehabilitation can have after a life-changing injury. In one particular case, the appropriate rehabilitation allowed my brain injured client to transform his life as from what it was before I took over the case. He had been unwilling to speak to anyone by phone and a simple phone call from him towards the end of the case was one of my most rewarding moments.
I have been fortunate to work with a fantastic team for many years and have seen us grow as a department and an office into the leading personal injury team in Manchester. We have achieved many great results for our clients and when combined with the wider services that Irwin Mitchell can offer, I am confident that we can meet any client's needs, whatever situation they are in.
I am the proud father of a little girl who joined us in November 2017, so I don’t get much spare time anymore. I enjoy watching sport; I’m a season ticket holder at Bury FC and I follow Leeds Rhinos. I also enjoy travelling, and have been fortunate enough to visit many countries in Europe, several Pacific islands, USA, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. I spend most weekends helping to look after our two horses, who seem to create endless work! I am also heavily involved in the running of Headway Blackburn with Darwen, Hyndburn & Ribble Valley, being appointed Treasurer in 2012.
“Road safety is such an important subject and Sophie’s family are hoping that holding this event in memory of her will raise awareness and prevent another family from suffering the loss that they have.
Sadly I often see the devastating impacts of careless driving in my work and I am proud to be supporting Sophie’s family in getting the message of road safety across to others.”
“This week has been incredibly difficult for everyone affected by this tragic incident.
Sophie’s family are still understandably distraught after losing their daughter in such a horrific way, and I hope that the end of the inquest will bring some closure to them and help them to move on from what has been a terribly tough year.
Dangerous driving impacts on so many people. Lessons need to be learned now so we can stop this happening to others.”
“This tragic case highlights the consequences of dangerous driving which has left its mark on so many people.
The inquest will be incredibly tough for Sophie’s family as they will have to hear evidence about the crash once again and re-live the tragedy in court. They hope that the Inquest will provide them with further closure as to what happened and identify if any lessons can be learned to prevent any similar incidents in future.”
“Two years on from Guy’s accident, Francesca and the family remain understandably devastated by their loss.
“Road safety is a cause we are passionate about as we see first-hand on a daily basis the impact that collisions can have on people’s lives – particularly vulnerable road users such as cyclists.
“Nothing is more important than your own safety and the safety of others on the roads. It is vital that people remember this when while driving, particularly on dangerous stretches of road.
“Considering the theme of this year’s Road Safety Week, it feels like the right time to speak out on the issue and call for something to be done to improve safety in this area.”
