Biography
I’m a Partner based in our Liverpool office and I’ve acted for seriously injured clients since 2001.
I’m an APIL accredited Senior Litigator and hold Brain Injury Specialist and Fatal Accidents Specialist accreditations.
I handle a wide range of serious injury cases including brain injury and fatal accident claims. This includes supporting families through criminal proceedings and inquests.
I also act for clients who’ve suffered spinal injuries, amputations and complex orthopaedic injuries. My clients often include children and the elderly. I’m frequently instructed to take over claims being handled by other solicitors where clients have become dissatisfied with the service provided by their previous firm.
Whilst I’m leading the growth of our Liverpool office, I’m also part of the leading personal injury team in Manchester which has achieved excellent results for many clients over the years.

Client Testimonials
"I was supported for my wife's (and my) claim by Matt throughout. He had assistance at times from Hannah and Emily. Matt was approachable, amenable and accessible for the 2 years he supported me. I find a really important aspect of what Irwin Mitchell done was alter their communication as my grief changed. A real skill. At the start I was lacking concentration and forgetful and in the end fully involved in the process. Matt was able to tailor his approach to my ever changing state throughout. I would recommend." - 5* Trustpilot review
"From day one they (Irwin Mitchell) were brilliant, explained exactly how the case would be run and arranged all of the clinicians and support staff. Matthew Garson was our solicitor and was great throughout, always available on the phone when we had questions and always in touch when to keep us informed of progress. I couldn't recommend Irwin Mitchell enough and will always be grateful for giving our family a future." -5* Trustpilot review
"With my parents being a big part of this journey, they are also very grateful for Matthew's communication and help with our understanding of the process, despite often being on the opposite side of the Atlantic from myself and Irwin Mitchell. Matthew and our whole team at Irwin Mitchell, as well as our barrister Daniel Paul were incredibly knowledgeable about all of the issues I was facing, and Matthew always arranged for me to get support for both my physical and emotional recovery swiftly from experts he trusted.
I appreciate everything Irwin Mitchell has done for myself and my parents over these last four years and could not have had a better experience or better results than the ones I have had working with them." - 5* Trustpilot review

" Matthew knew exactly what he was talking about! He is certainly good at his job! I was badly injured just under three years ago whilst at work, and for the last three years we have dealt with Matthew weekly-sometimes even daily. Matthew has been paramount in my recovery, as any injuries which I have discussed with him, have been investigated thoroughly. My recovery has been just as important to Irwin Mitchell as getting me a good settlement to help me in the future. Matthew has remained professional at all times and has listened to my frustrations and my constant pestering. " -5* Trustpilot review

What Inspired You To Get Into Law
My interest in law came from my father's work as a GP, assisting in preparing regulatory or disciplinary cases for General Medical Council hearings. This and my interest in investigating cases led me to explore a career in law. Being keen to use my medical interest, when combined with a desire to help those who have been seriously injured, the result was a career in personal injury law.
What Is The Most Rewarding Aspect Of Your Role
The most rewarding aspect of my role is seeing the benefit to my clients that the law can provide when they have been seriously injured. This can be in the form of financial compensation, but mainly it is in seeing the positive effects rehabilitation can have after a life-changing injury. In one particular case, the appropriate rehabilitation allowed my brain injured client to transform his life as from what it was before I took over the case. He had been unwilling to speak to anyone by phone and a simple phone call from him towards the end of the case was one of my most rewarding moments.
What Do You Like About Working At Irwin Mitchell?
I have been fortunate to work with a fantastic team for many years and have seen us grow as a department and an office into the leading personal injury team in Manchester. We have achieved many great results for our clients and when combined with the wider services that Irwin Mitchell can offer, I am confident that we can meet any client's needs, whatever situation they are in.
What Do You Do Away From The Office?
I am the proud father of a little girl who joined us in November 2017, so I don’t get much spare time anymore. I enjoy watching sport; I follow Leeds Rhinos. I also enjoy travelling, and have been fortunate enough to visit many countries in Europe, several Pacific islands, USA, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. I spend most weekends helping to look after our two horses, who seem to create endless work! I am also heavily involved in the running of Headway Blackburn with Darwen, Hyndburn & Ribble Valley, being appointed Treasurer in 2012.
