Solicitor
Gerard Devaney-Khodja

Biography

I am a solicitor in the Public Law and Human Rights team in our Manchester office specialising in civil liberties and judicial review challenges.

I joined Irwin Mitchell in 2021 as a trainee, qualifying in 2023.  Prior to this, I had a long career working with refugees and asylum seekers during which I set up a police monitoring project to challenge the treatment they faced by the police, in addition to pursuing Equality Act challenges against local authorities and the NHS relating to discrimination in the provision of services.

Following a change in career, I worked on the Hillsborough Inquests and then in prison law, as well as working on criminal cases representing environmental protesters.

I have a keen interest in actions against the police and, in particular, cases where the police prevent people from exercising their right to protest. Prior to qualifying as a solicitor, I volunteered for seven years as a legal observer at protests to support the legal rights of activists.

I am a member of Police Action Lawyers Group, Inquest Lawyers Group and Young Legal Aid Lawyers.
