A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a five-year-old girl died when she was hit by his van.

The child, who has not yet been named, sustained fatal injuries in the collision in Nuneaton, police said. A seven-year-old girl who was also hit by the van was taken to hospital with leg injuries.

A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving shortly after the collision. He was later released on police bail, pending further inquiries.

A Warwickshire Police spokesman said: "The collision involved a white Citroen Berlingo van driven by a 25-year-old male and two children who were not in the vehicle.

"One of the children, a five-year-old girl, suffered fatal injuries. The other, a seven-year-old girl, was taken to the George Eliot Hospital with leg injuries and was released after treatment."

The spokesman added that the five-year-olds name would not be released until the formal identification process has been completed and all close relatives informed.
