Specialist Asbestos Lawyers Support Leeds Charity
Every year, on the first Friday of July, organisations across the UK hold events locally to raise awareness of mesothelioma and other asbestos related disease, to commemorate people who have died and to raise funds for research and patient support.
The June Hancock Mesothelioma Research Fund will be hosting a Strawberry Tea on Friday 4 July 2014 from 2pm to 4pm at Leeds Metropolitan University, Queenswood House, Leeds.
The charity aims to raise awareness of mesothelioma and provide information on the work and research they have carried out in the last 12 months. There will also be an “open mic” for anyone who would like to share their thoughts, experiences or any relevant information.
People attending the event will also hear experts specialising in asbestos related diseases such as researchers, clinicians and legal experts.
Nicola Handley, a specialist asbestos-related disease lawyer at Irwin Mitchell’s Leeds office supporting the event, said: “Thousands of people are dying from mesothelioma every year as a result of the negligence decades ago by their employers in exposing them to deadly asbestos dust, often with little or no protection.
“Action Mesothelioma Day is a time to reflect on those who have lost their lives or have been diagnosed with the dreadful disease. It is also a time to push for further help and support for victims by raising funds for research in relation to treatment and ensuring that clients have access to justice.”
Kate Hill, Trustee of the June Hancock Mesothelioma Researched Fund, said “The organisation relies on the generosity of its donors; Action Mesothelioma Day is an opportunity to meet our friends and supporters to say a big thank you for their continued support and update them on current research themes and progress being made in mesothelioma research.”
The June Hancock Mesothelioma Research Fund has raised over £1.3m for research since its inception in 1997; over £1m has been distributed to accredited research institutions in the UK and Republic of Ireland. The Fund was set up in memory of June Hancock who grew up and went to school in the Armley area of Leeds. She was diagnosed with the fatal asbestos cancer mesothelioma as a result of exposure to asbestos dust released from the JW Roberts factory.
