Expert Concerned By Reports
A mother and two-year-old daughter from Nottinghamshire have been injured following a dog attack on a high street.
The woman suffered a serious hand injury and puncture wounds in the incident involving a Staffordshire bull terrier in Radcliffe-on-Trent on May 3rd, while her daughter suffered scratches.
Following the incident, a man has been charged for letting the dog become out of control in a public place and is due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court later this week.
The dog has also been seized and destroyed by authorities.
Katrina Elsey, an animal bites specialist at Irwin Mitchell who represents a number of victims who have been serious injured in dog attacks, said such incidents are sadly not uncommon.
She explained: “Dog attacks can have a major emotional and physical impact on victims of all ages, causing severe psychological injuries which many people often struggle to recover from.
“While only a handful of details have been released regarding this case, it is yet another which highlights the need for improved controls and measures to protect people from the threat of attack.
“We have long campaigned on the issue, particularly calling for the introduction of compulsory insurance and licensing which will help to identify owners and ensure anyone injured has access to vital funds that can aid their recovery.
“With the number of incidents showing no signs of falling, it is vital that the government and authorities consider how the problem can be tackled.”
