Companies Across The Region Urged To Improve

Companies must react quickly to the findings of workplace inspections carried out across West Yorkshire by the Health and Safety Executive, a leading injury lawyer at Irwin Mitchell has claimed.

The government body has revealed that more than 70 companies in the region have been urged to make improvements to their operations in order to protect their workers, with a range of hazards identified during visits.

Prohibition notices were served in eight of the inspections, while 63 were served with improvement notices. Among the problems found were missing or inadequate guards around machinery and uncontrolled exposure to fumes produced during welding.

David Urpeth, national head of workplace injuries for Irwin Mitchell, said: “It is clear from the findings that many companies in West Yorkshire need to place the welfare of their employees higher up their agenda.

“Hazards in the workplace can often be tackled through the use of safe systems of work, correct equipment and adequate training. As such, I urge companies to ensure they invest in health and safety to ensure no preventable incidents occur.

“Illness and injury in the workplace can often have a major physical and emotional impact on victims, so I hope that businesses wake up to the importance of keeping their employees safe.”
