Matthew Garson

I am an associate solicitor and have acted for clients in the field of serious injury for over 10 years.

I handle a wide range of serious injury cases including brain and spinal injury claims. I also act for clients who have suffered amputations or complex orthopaedic injuries, including children.  I also have experience of professional negligence cases against other solicitors arising from badly handled personal injury claims

I am part of the leading personal injury team in Manchester which has secured many excellent results for clients over the years, recognised by Manchester Legal Awards in 2012 by being awarded Personal Injury/Clinical Negligence Team of the Year.

I was also recognised by The Post Magazine in 2011 in relation to the work I have done with one of my amputee clients, and awarded the Rehabilitation Initiative Award which I am very proud of.

"sensitive to the needs of the wider family, who sometimes almost get ignored in the rush to make sure the client gets the right thing." - Chambers & Partners 2014

What Inspired You To Get Into Law

My interest in law arose from my father's work as a GP assisting in preparing cases for General Medical Council hearings.  As a result of also being from a medical family and with this developing interest in investigating cases, this led me to explore law as a career, but I was keen to use my limited medical knowledge.  When combined with a desire to help those who have been seriously injured, the result was a career in personal injury law.

What Is The Most Rewarding Aspect Of Your Role

The most rewarding aspect of my role is seeing the benefit to my clients that the law can provide when they have been seriously injured.  This is not necessarily the financial settlement but mainly the improvement that can be achieved in a person's life after a serious injury with appropriate rehabilitation.  In one particular case, the appropriate rehabilitation allowed my brain injured client to transform his life as it was before I took over the case and a simple phone call from him when he had been unwilling to speak to anyone by phone was one of my most rewarding moments.

What Do You Like About Working At Irwin Mitchell?

I have been fortunate to work with a fantastic team for many years and have seen us grow as a department and an office into one of the leading personal injury teams in Manchester. We have achieved numerous great results for our clients and when combined with the wider services that Irwin Mitchell can offer, I am confident that we can meet any client's needs, whatever situation they are in.

What Do You Do Away From The Office?

I enjoy sport, although mainly watching these days, including being a season ticket holder at my boyhood team, Bury FC.  I also enjoy travelling and have recently visited Colorado and Melbourne in separate trips to visit family.  I spend most weekends helping to look after our two horses who seem to create endless work!  I am also heavily involved in the running of Headway Blackburn with Darwen, Hyndburn & Ribble Valley, being appointed Treasurer in 2012.

North West Firm Pleads Guilty To Health And Safety Breaches After Mechanic Seriously Injured At Work

“The HSE prosecution has been a significant milestone for Stuart and Natasha and they are understandably relieved that Pye Motors have pleaded guilty to the charges outlined by the HSE following its investigation into this terrible incident. “Stuart went to work that day expecting that his employers would do all they could to keep him safe, but sadly they didn’t, and as a result he suffered life-changing injuries, which left him in hospital for almost two months and facing a long recovery battle and the prospect of not being able to continue in his chosen career. “Stuart is determined to get answers about what happened to him and his former employers taking responsibility for what happened to him is a major step forward. We are now helping Stuart and Natasha in a civil claim against his former employers in a bid to secure him the funds he will require to continue his rehabilitation and physiotherapy. “This incident could have been a lot worse and we hope it acts as a reminder to employers of the need to take their responsibilities for safety seriously to avoid incidents like this, which have turned Stuart’s life upside down, in the future.”
