Birmingham City Council Has Announced A Wider Review
A new report published by Birmingham City Council’s scrutiny committee has revealed that at least 132 children in Birmingham are suffering or are vulnerable to sexual exploitation. The report, which has been developed after a 12 month investigation, stated that there is a “serious child sexual exploitation problem” in Birmingham and that children in care or involved in gangs were most at risk of becoming victims of sexual abuse.
It highlighted 83 children which it described as at high-risk – 80 girls and 3 boys – and noted that there were a few cases where “appropriate action had not been taken” to protect children at risk of being sexually exploited.
The council said it hoped the report would act as a "wake-up call" to professionals and children, who may not necessarily consider themselves as victims of sexual abuse, and will help to raise awareness and understanding of the issue.
Birmingham City Council has also started a wider review into child sexual exploitation in the city.
Expert Opinion
The number of children in Birmingham currently being sexually exploited or at risk of exploitation is very troubling and it is vital a thorough investigation is carried out to understand what can be done to improve the services available to young people at risk of abuse.

“The priority now is ensuring those who have suffered abuse in Birmingham or are in danger of being subjected to sexual exploitation are provided with the help and support they need.

“We have seen the impact these offences can have on survivors and it is crucial they are able to access the support network they require to continue with their lives, as well as being reassured that action is being taken to prevent similar situations in the future.” Luke Daniels - Partner
