Women's Refuges To Receive Extra Funding

The government has pledged a £10m fund that will support women's refuges in 100 areas across England, as part of a global campaign against domestic violence.

Announced on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the fund will be made available over 2014 and 2015, and will build upon previous efforts to increase funding to local support services and helplines.

Communities Secretary Eric Pickles has also written to all of England's councils reminding them of their legal duty to house women and children who have been forced out of their homes due to violence.

According to government figures, conviction rates for domestic violence are at their highest ever level, with 74.6% of all cases reaching successful outcomes.

"Specialist refuges can mean the difference between life and death for some victims of domestic abuse, and today’s £10 million funding will help councils maintain this vital national network and ensure support is provided wherever it is needed," said Mr Pickles.
