Childcarers Face Court Over Death

Negligence at nursery

The company that ran a Cambridgeshire nursery where a 10-month-old girl choked to death on a piece of apple will face court over breaches of health and safety laws.

Georgia Hollick attended the Just Learning Nursery, near her home in Cambourne, along with her sister Jasmine, now aged five.

On April 19, 2006, she was taken to hospital after choking on a slice of apple she was given as a snack, but was later pronounced dead.

Just Learning of West Malling, Kent, has been charged with charged with "failing to have adequate processes and systems in place to protect the health and safety of those not in its employment" between 31 January 2005 and 20 April 2006.

The firm will face Cambridge Crown Court on September 11 after South Cambridgeshire District Council brought the action following a prolonged investigation.

Just Learning did not submit a plea. An inquest found the cause of death of the 10-month-old was accidental.
