This one day conference will focus on the topic of Complex Trauma and Amputation Rehabilitation for Service Personnel – a lifelong commitment. The conference is aimed at healthcare professionals and those working in military rehabilitation to highlight the impact of complex trauma and amputation and the many challenges faced during rehabilitation. The conference will also stress the importance of assisting those injured to return to the quality of life they experienced before they were injured. This includes adventurous sports, holidays and adventurous rehabilitation.
Dr Koseen Ford, Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Neuropsychologist will be looking at issues of pain as a barrier to rehabilitation and pain management strategies. Dr Emily Mayhew of Imperial College has recently co-authored a paper in The Lancet on how little progress has been made with regard to post amputation pain since World War I in spite of unprecedented patient numbers and a greater understanding of the pain in a surgical context. Dr Mayhew is the author of “Wounded – the Long Journey Home from the Great War” that was shortlisted for the 2014 Wellcome Trust Book Prize.
Other speaks include the inspirational Andy Reid and Stephen Cruise from the charity AIM (Amputation, Inspiration, & Motivation) on issues surrounding the users of the military rehabilitation and their transition to civilian life and treatment. There will also be a speaker from Blatchford who is the largest supplier of prosthetic and orthotic services to the NHS and MOD in the UK and who is the service provider to the military at Headley Court.
Alison Hawes of the family team at Irwin Mitchell will be discussing how to safeguard AFCS and civil compensation for the injured person given there lifelong needs.
