1 October 2015, the sixth bi-annual BIRT
Conference was a ‘must attend’ event for
professionals working in the field of brain
injury. Thought-provoking and inspiring
plenary sessions were delivered by world
renowned speakers, including Professor Mark
Solms who discussed neuropsychology, and
Professor Skye McDonald who addressed
the issue of social cognition following severe
traumatic brain injury.
In workshop sessions, practitioners shared
research strategies and thoughts on recent
developments in brain injury rehabilitation.
Topics ranged from alcohol related
brain damage, assistive technology and
rehabilitation in multicultural settings, to
supporting the most vulnerable people with
Deirdre Healy, Consultant at the Manchester
office of Irwin Mitchell who was recently
named joint winner of the UKABIF Lawyer of
the Year Award, presented a session on the
Design for Life initiative, covering advances in
effective treatments to support people with
activities in daily living.
Comedian, actress and writer Francesca
Martinez entertained guests at the Gala
Dinner Evening with her unique insights on
society’s approach to disability.
The new BIRT Guide to Living for adults with
brain injury, with a legal section sponsored
by Irwin Mitchell, was also launched at the
