Human Rights Lawyers

No matter who you are, you have human rights. Public bodies and organisations such as the government, the police, hospitals, schools, councils and courts have a legal duty to respect and protect those rights at all times.

If a public body acts unlawfully, unfairly, or outside its powers, you may be able to challenge its decision through judicial review or bring a claim under Public Law.

What counts as a violation of human rights?

Human rights underpin every aspect of our lives, but some of the key principles involve:

  • The right to life
  • The right to a private life
  • Freedom from discrimination or harassment
  • Access to healthcare and medication

Violations of human rights can take many forms. The most common ones we deal with are:

  • Deprivation of liberty
  • Discrimination or harassment
  • Inadequate health or social care
  • Death or serious injury while in state care
  • Mistreatment or false imprisonment by the police
  • Denial of healthcare/medication for financial reasons
  • Unlawful disclosure of your personal information

Anyone can have their human rights breached, but some are more vulnerable than others, such as:

  • People with complex care needs
  • Children with special educational needs (SEN)
  • People in police custody or other state detention.

Legal reforms and funding cuts within the social sector can mean vital services are withdrawn for those who need them most. Our team has helped many families challenge local authority decisions to make sure vulnerable children and adults have access to the education, care and support they are entitled to.

Infringement of your human rights can take on many forms, and you need a legal team that understands the nuances of these cases across different areas of law.

Our Public Law experts have the expertise you need to build a strong case and will fight to get you the justice you deserve.

Finding you the right advice

If you believe you have suffered an infringement of these rights, we could help you make a claim. Our expert solicitors have extensive experience challenging human rights abuses.
  • Actions Against the Police

If you or a loved one have been significantly impacted due to police misconduct, our expert lawyers may be able to help you get the answers and the compensation you deserve.

  • Data Protection

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018 impose strict requirements, and failing to adhere to them can result in fines, regulatory scrutiny, and reputational harm.

  • Deprivation of Liberty

Hospitals and care homes can legally restrict the freedom of people who can't make decisions for themselves to provide care and treatment. If you or someone you know is facing restrictions that you think are unfair, we may be able to help.

  • Education Law

Our specialist education law solicitors help families, young people, and education professionals resolve issues ranging from Special Educational Needs (SEN) support to school exclusions, disability discrimination, Ofsted challenges and disputes with local authorities.

  • Inadequate Health or Social Care

If care, treatments, or facilities you were depending on have been cut or denied, we can advocate to get you reconnected with the help you need.

  • Judicial Review

If a public body makes a decision that breaches the Human Rights Act,  you can challenge them through the judicial review process.

Who can make a public law claim?

Anyone who has had their rights infringed or has been treated unfairly by a public body can make a claim. You can also claim on behalf of people who are unable to make decisions for themselves, such as adults with certain mental illnesses or brain injuries, or children.

Charities, campaign groups and local interest groups may also make claims on behalf of individuals or groups of people that have been affected by a public body decision.

Most areas of public law require you to go through complaints and appeals procedures before you can take legal action in a court, but we can advise, support and represent you at any stage of the process. You don't need to be ready to go to court to take advantage of our in-depth knowledge and negotiation skills.
