Savile Abuse Compensation Scheme Given Green Light

Court Of Appeal Sanctions Process To Support Victims

The Court of Appeal has approved a compensation scheme set up to provide financial support to victims of abuse by Jimmy Savile.

The decision to sanction the scheme created by a number of parties including the estate executor, charities and lawyers representing abuse victims, came following a challenge by the Jimmy Savile Charitable Trust regarding the plans.

Appeal judges were asked to consider the plans after the trust, which was a major beneficiary from the television presenter’s estate, raise concerns related to several aspects of the scheme.

Following a hearing where they analysed arguments last month, the judges dismissed the challenge.

Expert Opinion
The revelations which have emerged regarding Savile in the past couple of years have shocked the nation and it is very welcome that this new scheme to provide vital support to victims has been give the green light.

"Many of his victims have lived with the psychological trauma of the abuse for a great number of years and the recent reports have served to once again bring much of that pain to the fore.

"The vital funds that victims will receive will be hugely important in terms of ensuring they can access the counselling and other support they need to move forward with their lives."
