A family whose holiday was “ruined” when three of them required hospital treatment following gastric illness have instructed expert travel lawyers at Irwin Mitchell to investigate the cause of their illness.

Mrs Atkinson, 37, her daughters aged ten, and  five, from Doncaster, all suffered gastric symptoms, including diarrhoea, stomach cramps, fever and dehydration during their two-week stay at the Club Alize hotel, Marmaris in August 2015.

They have now instructed expert travel illness lawyers at Irwin Mitchell to investigate the cause of their illness after their symptoms, which have continued since their return to the UK, affected them so badly that they were admitted to hospital in Turkey and placed on IV drips to rehydrate them.

The holiday, which was booked with TUI UK Limited t/a First Choice Holidays along with five other family members, was intended to be a relaxing break, but the family say it was “ruined” by the illness Mrs Atkinson and her daughters suffered.

Mrs Atkinson, from Armthorpe, Doncaster, visited the hotel in 2013, but told her legal team the hotel felt completely different when she visited it in 2015. She said food was sometimes not hot enough and on occasions left uncovered throughout the sitting.

She also said she saw new food being added to old food in the hotel’s restaurant.

Nichola Blackburn, a travel illness expert in Irwin Mitchell’s International Personal Injury Department, representing the family, said:

Expert Opinion
“It is extremely worrying to hear how ill Mrs Atkinson and her daughters were.

“We have now launched our own investigation into the cause of their illness to provide Mrs Atkinson and her family with the answers they deserve about what caused them to fall ill.

“This was supposed to be a relaxing family holiday but it ended with three members of the group in hospital on IV drips. We would urge anyone else who suffered similar issues at the hotel to contact us as they may be able to assist with our investigation.”

Mrs Atkinson, a pre-school teacher, said: “I booked this hotel for our family holiday as I’d stayed there before in 2013 and had really enjoyed it. However, I was not as happy with it this time around.

“Some of food was served undercooked and on occasions food was not hot enough. The last thing we expected was to suffer such horrendous symptoms during the holiday and end up spending a day of the holiday in a Turkish hospital.

“Myself and my children are still suffering the effects of the illness nearly three months after coming back to the UK and we have been left extremely angry and upset. We want to understand what caused us to fall ill.”
