Label Incorrectly States Product Is ‘Gluten Free’ & With ‘No Added Egg’
Food manufacturer Cow & Gate has launched a recall of certain batches of 200g jars of their Sweet Squash and Chicken Baby Food, following concerns regarding incorrect labelling on the products.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has outlined in a notice that packs with the best before dates of 01/07/16, 22/07/16, 21/08/16 and 10/09/16 are subject to the recall.
The reason for the recall is that “the label incorrectly shows ‘no added egg’ and ‘gluten free’ in a tick box” despite the fact that the ingredients listed on the product correctly confirms that the food does contain both egg and wheat.
It is warned that the product therefore could represent a risk to anyone with an allergy or intolerance to wheat, as well as those with an allergy or intolerance to egg.
The FSA said that anyone who may have bought the products and has a baby with an allergy or intolerance to wheat or egg should return it to the store where they purchased the product for a full refund.
Expert Opinion
It is very worrying to see reports of this issue and we welcome the swift action taken to recall the affected products. However it is vital that a wider investigation is undertaken to determine what can be done to prevent the same issues arising in the future. <br/> <br/>"We would urge anyone who thinks they may have affected products to follow guidance on the matter, while lessons simply have to be learned to ensure these issues are not repeated."
