Concerns Raised Over Use Of PPD

21/11/2011

A woman from West Yorkshire is in a serious condition after reportedly suffering an allergic reaction to a L’Oreal Preference hair dye product.

Julie McCabe was taken to hospital at the end of October after collapsing while rinsing the product out of her hair at home in Keighley. She is now in a coma and doctors have suggested she will be left with a permanent brain injury if she recovers.

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the problems and, while no formal link has been made with the hair dye, her family have fears it may have been a reaction to para-phenylenediamine – or PPD – which is an ingredient in the product.

Product liability claim experts at Irwin Mitchell have acted for a number of women who suffered health problems after using Clairol hair dye products which contained PPD.

Gary Walker, a solicitor in the team at the firm’s Sheffield office, said: “Following our work in this area, we have long-held concerns over the use of PPD in hair dye products.

“We are not the only ones, with the use of PPD in such items being banned across Europe. This should send a clear signal to manufacturers in the UK that they should rethink their use of the substance.

“While it remains to be seen whether the terrible problems in this case can be linked to the chemical, we hope that medical experts and the manufacturer are able to quickly identify whether the product played a part and how such issues could be avoided in the future.”
