Sheffield Man Paid £12,000 for Noise Induced Hearing Loss

Noise induced hearing loss case

A Sheffield man has been awarded £12,000 compensation pay out after he contracted noise induced hearing loss as a result of being exposed to noise from power tools whilst working for Plumb Furniture Systems Limited.

Peter Nelson, aged 65 from Mosborough, Sheffield made the claim through the specialist Industrial Disease Team at the Sheffield office of law firm Irwin Mitchell.

As a result of being exposed to noise from circular saws, routers, sledge hammers, brakers and drills Mr Nelson developed hearing loss which is irreversible and causes Mr Nelson to have difficulties in understanding conversation and he now has to wear a hearing aid.

Recalling his work, Mr Nelson said: “The majority of the work I did for Plumb Furniture Systems Limited was fitting out stores or other retail outlets which dirty and noisy work.”

“Often there were 10 or 15 people involved in ripping out the fixtures, hanging systems, counters and displays etc and this created a great deal of noise. I myself used noisy tools and equipment such as circular saws and routers.”

“I am delighted that I have been compensated as I am now in a position to replace my NHS hearing aids with more modern state of the art private hearing aids which improves the quality of both my hearing and my life”.

Mark Allen from law firm Irwin Mitchell said: “Mr Nelson was never warned or advised about the dangers of noise induced hearing loss or was provided with any protective equipment.

“This case highlights the importance of health and safety policies. Employers have a duty of care to their staff which includes ensuring full protective equipment is provided so workers exposure to risk is kept to a minimum. “
