Successful Mesothelioma Claim Carried Out on Behalf of Widow
Six figure mesothelioma compensation case
In May 2005 Mr Michael Buck became unwell with symptoms of breathlessness and pain in his chest. At the beginning of June 2005 he had an x-ray which showed fluid on his lung. He went into hospital to have the fluid drained and for investigations into the cause.
A biopsy at Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital showed that he had a tumour. Sadly, that tumour turned out to be mesothelioma, a deadly form of cancer almost always associated with previous asbestos exposure. Michael, as is the case with many people faced with this terrible diagnosis, could not recall any significant exposure to asbestos in the past.
He spent almost all his working life as a watch repairer. He worked for a firm of jewellers called Dryden & Son in King's Lynn. After some thought, Michael remembered that the workshop he worked in contained untreated asbestos sheeting used as fireproofing. Michael was there when the fireproofing was installed and he swept it every week for many years afterwards. That was the source of his exposure to asbestos.
Evidence was gathered and a claim was prepared for issue against Dryden & Son. Tragically, Michael died in April 2006 but a claim was continued on his behalf by his widow, Maureen. A claim was issued in March 2007. After hard fought litigation, the claim was settled in September 2007 for £158,000.
