My name’s Nicki Clegg and I’m the chief technology officer at Irwin Mitchell. I’ve worked here for four years.
The culture within my team is incredibly supportive. We work really hard to create a psychologically safe environment for all our colleagues. We’re collaborative and vulnerable with each other, and try to have as much fun as possible. We also support colleagues within the organisation to understand how technology can enable them, as well as coaching them to be curious about what it can do.
Earlier this year, I was on holiday and I was hospitalised. I had to take some unplanned sick leave, but my team were so kind and helpful. They took my worries about work away, so I could really focus on getting better.
When I came back I was more determined to deliver than ever before and that’s because our culture is based on support and success. You can’t have one without the other.
Commitment To Responsibility
One of the key reasons I joined Irwin Mitchell, alongside our digital transformation, was the firm’s mission to become a responsible business. Being part of a responsible business is really important to me because I’m driven by sustainability, diversity and inclusion. When I was a PhD researcher, my background was in climate modelling, so I was keen to understand the impact of human actions on the environment.
Microsoft is one of our key partners, and we’re working closely with them to support how we become a responsible business. Technology has quite a large impact on the environment with data centres and energy, but Microsoft have a strong target in meeting net zero. By partnering with them, we’re driving our mission forward to reduce our own environmental impact.
Feeling More Energised
At the start of the pandemic, we moved to working from home, which was enabled quickly through technology.
I’ve really benefited from our flexible by choice policy. It’s great that we’re trusted to do the right work, in the right place at the right time. This flexible approach has allowed me to choose when I start and finish each day, along with the length of my breaks.
I feel more energised and able to perform to the best of my ability. I’ve also had more time to connect with my friends and family, which has been wonderful. Some of my team have moved to a four day week to take advantage of the policy and we’ve also been able to recruit some great new talent on home working contracts.
Creating The Right Environment
Our Chief Information Office is made up of a number of different departments, including information security, data, technology, IT service and business change and transformation. We’re at the centre of delivering the business strategy and enabling the organisation to deliver its growth plan.
There’s a lot of pressure involved in delivering a business transformation and a lot of constraints and difficult stakeholder relationships. So it’s important that we create an environment where our teams feel secure about having challenging conversations to deliver positive outcomes. This allows them to be as creative as possible in resolving some of the challenges they face.
As a leader, I want my teams to be the best they can be. I make sure to give them lots of development opportunities. I’m proud to say that over the last twelve months, 48% of our vacancies have been filled internally – that’s the human touch that matters to me.
Accelerating Our Growth
Technology is really important to Irwin Mitchell, with our goal of becoming a digital business. My role involves making sure we’re investing in the right technology to meet the needs of our clients and colleagues, as well as to grow as a business. I also make sure that we remain flexible and agile in terms of the services we provide.
We’ve been working hard to develop partnerships with industry leaders across our supply chain, particularly Microsoft, One Advanced and Peppermint, to accelerate the delivery of our strategy. It’s really exciting that we’re going to change how we deliver services to both clients and colleagues, making processes more effective and the client experience extraordinary.
Work For Us
If you're passionate about technology and considering a career with us, I’d highly recommend it. We’re going to disrupt how legal services are provided within the UK and beyond, and we're going to achieve that with technology.
Diversity of thought is really important when it comes to tech solutions, and what’s really important to us is having a diverse and inclusive workforce. So, no matter who you are or where you’ve come from, you’re valued for who you are and what you bring. Come and join our growing team!
