Irwin Mitchell Offers Support Through Its Don’t Quit Do It Initiative

A para-alpine skier from Dorset who hopes to compete at the Winter Paralympics in Beijing in 2022 has received a funding boost from national law firm Irwin Mitchell as part of its ongoing campaign to support disability sport.

Alex Slegg, 27, from Poole, served in the Armed Forces until nerve damage in his back took away the use of his right leg and he spent three years confined to a wheelchair.

During that period he learnt to ski through the Battle Back Program. Alex then joined the Armed Forces Para-Snow Sport Team (AFPST) and became a full time ski racer going on to compete at international level. He was also one of five athletes recently selected to visit South Korea as part of the Paralympic Inspiration Programme, a partnership between Help for Heroes and the British Paralympic Association designed to help them prepare for competing in 2022.

Now, Irwin Mitchell has provided Alex with a grant of £500 which he is set to put towards future race entry fees, as well as accommodation and new equipment.

The law firm has provided the funding as part of its ongoing Don’t Quit, Do It initiative, which aims to highlight the benefits of disability sport and provide support to emerging talent in a range of disciplines. The campaign is backed by multiple gold medal-winning Paralympian Hannah Cockroft MBE.

Alex added: “I am very grateful to Irwin Mitchell for their support ahead of my four year journey to Beijing 2022.

“My grant will help hugely as I prepare for the 2022 Winter Paralympic Games and I am determined to proudly serve my country once again.”

The Don’t Quit, Do It grant programme from Irwin Mitchell offers individuals, disability sport charities and groups an opportunity to apply for help with the cost of training, equipment or participation in major events. Since its launch it has provided more than £50,000 to a range of different projects in the UK.

Furthermore, last year the firm was the Official Legal Services Provider of the World Para Athletics Championships in London and a supporter of the Superhero Series held at Dorney Lake in Windsor.
