Loved Ones And Lawyers Seek Information On Two Construction Projects

The wife of a former joiner who died of asbestos-related cancer last year has teamed up with legal experts to call on anyone who may have worked with him during two jobs in the 1960s to come forward and help her gain justice regarding his death.

Stanley Mills, from Ainsworth in Bolton, died aged 79 on December 3rd 2016 shortly after he was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a cancer of the lining of the lung commonly associated with exposure to asbestos materials.

Following his death, his wife Christine, instructed specialist asbestos-related disease lawyers at Irwin Mitchell to investigate how he came into contact with asbestos and whether more could have been done to prevent his illness.

Now, as part of their work, the legal experts are appealing for anyone who worked with Stanley either on a project for Alan Lawders Builders between 1961 and 1962 or on another for Charles Topham & Sons in 1969 to get in touch and shed light on the presence of asbestos at the jobs.

“This case provides a tragic reminder of the consequences that asbestos has had on so many lives and how such issues only become apparent decades after victims are believed to have first come into contact with the material.

“Prior to his death, Stanley had spoken of his belief that he may have been exposed to asbestos during these jobs and we would be keen for more information on this.

“We would be hugely grateful if anyone who either worked with Stanley or has details on the companies involved could come forward and help us with our investigations.” Dominic Hemsi - Partner

Stanley is believed to have worked with Alan Lawders Builders between 1961 and 1962 on the construction of new properties on a housing estate on Bradley Fold Road in Ainsworth. He recalled working as an apprentice joiner on the project and thought he may have handled asbestos panels while constructing cabins on the site.

His work for Charles Topham & Sons in 1969 lasted around eight months and saw him construct roofs on new-build housing on Peel Green Road near Barton Bridge. Stanley believed he was exposed to asbestos while making soffits for the roofs.

Stanley’s wife Christine said: “It is just over 12 months since Stanley died and the entire family misses him so much. It was incredibly difficult to see how mesothelioma affected him in the final weeks of his life and we all feel we deserve answers regarding how his illness developed.

“He strongly believed that his asbestos exposure may have occurred during these jobs so we would hugely appreciate it if anyone with information regarding the projects would be able to come forward. Any detail, no matter how small, could make a huge difference.”
