Cyclist Andrew Wilsea Was Killed When His Bicycle Was Hit By Robert Hall’s Car
The partner of a cyclist killed after being hit by a car on his way home from work has spoken of her relief today as the driver of the car was found guilty of death by dangerous driving at Leeds Crown Court.
Andrew Wilsea, 41, was fatally injured in a collision with a Rover 45, driven by Robert Hall, on the A62 Gelderd Road at Gildersome, in Leeds, when police believe Mr Hall lost control of his car while speeding.
Mr Hall was sentenced to six years in prison and was given a nine-year driving ban.
Specialist road accident lawyers at Irwin Mitchell have been instructed by the Grace Gartside, Andrew’s partner for over 15 years, to support them since the fatal incident.
Grace, who has four children with Andrew, said: “It is a relief that the driver has been found guilty, but it is disappointing that he pleaded not guilty and didn’t take responsibility for his actions, however nothing will ever bring back the father of my children.
“The incident has had a huge impact on mine and the rest of the family’s lives, and ultimately, today’s verdict will not undo what’s happened. Andrew was such a healthy and active man. It is still hard to believe at times he is no longer with us.”
Andrew, who had only recently returned to work following his paternity leave, was cycling home from work when he was hit by Mr Hall in August 2015.
Claire Newstead, an expert serious injury and road accident lawyer at Irwin Mitchell, representing the family said:
Expert Opinion
“As this case shows, the consequences of failing to be fully aware of other road users while driving can be fatal and devastating. Due to Mr Hall’s actions, four young children will now have to grow up without their father.
“Nothing is more important than your own safety and the safety of others on the roads. It is vital that people remember this when while driving, particularly over the festive period, as we see first-hand on a daily basis the impact careless driving has on people’s lives.” Claire Newstead - Partner
