Ashley Jenkinson Is Appealing For Help From His Former Colleagues After Shock Mesothelioma Diagnosis
An electrical engineer who was told he had asbestos-related cancer is appealing to former colleagues to help him discover how he became exposed to the deadly substance.
Ashley Jenkinson was diagnosed with a malignant mesothelioma, a cancer of the lining of the lungs, caused by asbestos exposure, in May this year.
The 76-year-old grandfather-of- one instructed expert asbestos related disease lawyers at Irwin Mitchell to investigate how he became exposed to asbestos during his time as an electrical engineer between 1956 and 1990.
Ashley, who lives with wife Heather, 69 in Waterthorpe, Sheffield, said: “To be told you have cancer is devastating, but after the shock has subsided all you’re left with are questions.
“I don’t remember ever being warned about asbestos, or provided with any safety equipment to protect myself from it, so I’m really hoping that some of my old colleagues can provide me with the answers.”
Ashley started his career at Dunford and Elliott Limited, Steel Works on Chippingham Road, Darnall in 1956, working an apprentice electrical engineer before qualifying as an electrical engineer in 1960. The firm later became known as Dunford Hadfield.
Ashley left Dunford and Elliott in 1967, taking up a post at Alfred Peters Limited based on Gell Street, Sheffield. The firm manufactured instruments for the audiology industry, designed to measure levels of hearing loss. Ashley was an electrical engineer mostly based in the machine shop until he left in 1975.
Between 1975 and 1990, Ashley worked at Davy Loewy, a steel and engineering works on Prince of Wales Road, Sheffield. He worked in the firm’s design office working on electrical engineering design and spent periods of time abroad, working in East Germany, Russia and Finland.
Irwin Mitchell is examining Ashley’s working life and is calling on his former colleagues, or anyone who worked at Dunford and Elliott, Alfred Peters Ltd or Davy Loewy who can help them determine how the engineer came into contact with asbestos fibres.
Simone Hardy, expert asbestos-related disease lawyer at Irwin Mitchell, representing Ashley, said: “No information is irrelevant, but we’re specifically looking for anyone who may be able to recall possible sources of asbestos exposure at these three companies, such as lagging in pipes or asbestos sheeting material.
Anyone with information on the presence of asbestos at Dunford and Elliott, Alfred Peters Ltd or Davy Loewy in Sheffield should contact Simone Hardy on 0114 274 4420 or email Simone.Hardy@IrwinMitchell.com
