Workplace Illness Aiming To Raise Awareness With Tea For Tinnitus Party

Workplace illness experts at Irwin Mitchell are aiming to raise awareness of the problems experienced by those suffering with tinnitus as part of this year’s Tinnitus Awareness Week, which is in its tenth year.

The law firm is also calling for employers in all industries to improve the hearing protection they provide to workers in the hope of reducing the number of people affected by hearing damage caused by a noisy working environment.

Ahead of the tenth National Tinnitus Awareness Week, which is organised by the British Tinnitus Association (BTA) and runs from 8th-14th February 2016, figures indicate that ten per cent of UK adults suffer with tinnitus.

The condition can manifest itself as buzzing, ringing, humming or whistling sounds despite no external source of the noise. The condition can be extremely frustrating for victims and can have a serious impact on their day-to-day lives.

To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the awareness week, the BTA is launching a Tea for Tinnitus campaign, which encourages people to meet and talk about the condition, how it can be prevented, how symptoms can be managed and to raise funds to help support those affected by tinnitus.

Irwin Mitchell’s workplace illness specialists, who have successfully represented thousands of people who suffer with noise-induced hearing loss and tinnitus, and helped them gain access to the help and support they need, will be hosting a tea party at its Sheffield office on 10th February.

Sarah Tagg, a workplace illness expert at Irwin Mitchell, who has heard first-hand from many tinnitus sufferers who she has represented, said: “Tinnitus really is a very frustrating condition for those who suffer from it and it can also impact their friends and family, who can often struggle to understand the problems it can cause.

“We have seen the huge impact tinnitus can have on the lives of sufferers and we hope this awareness week will raise the profile of the condition and inform sufferers of the help and support available to them.

“Despite the problems associated with noisy work environment being well known, we are still regularly contacted by people who have suffered noise-induced hearing damage and developed tinnitus as a result of being exposed to excessive levels of noise at work. It is vital employers do more to protect their members of staff and take any necessary action to protect the hearing of employees who spend time in a noisy environment.

“We hope that by supporting Tinnitus Awareness Week we can help to raise awareness of the condition, as well as the importance of protecting workers and the long-term and life-changing consequences that a lack of hearing protection can have on workers.”
