Expert Lawyers Are Helping The Victims’ Family Following Crash
The family of a mother and daughter killed when they were hit by a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) at a pedestrian crossing have spoken of their relief as the driver was sentenced to 14 months in jail.
Zena Jackson, 43, and Cidalia Mendez-Jackson, 6, were struck by the HGV, driven by Neville Fletcher, 55, while on a pedestrian crossing in Spring Bank, Hull, on April 29.
Specialist road accident lawyers at Irwin Mitchell have been instructed by the family of Zena and Cidalia, to support them since the fatal incident.
On the 6th December, Neville Fletcher, of Southcoates Lane in east Hull, was sentenced to 14 months in prison, and given a driving ban for 5 years and 7 months at Hull Crown Court, after pleading guilty to two counts of death by careless driving.
Mr Mendes, father of Cidalia, said: “It is a relief that the driver pleaded guilty taking responsibility for his action, however nothing will ever bring back Zena and Cidalia. The incident has had a huge impact on mine and the rest of the family’s lives, and ultimately, today’s sentencing will not undo what’s happened.
“It is so important that drivers, particularly HGV drivers, pay proper attention behind the wheel, and don’t attempt such careless and dangerous manoeuvres like the one that took away Zena and Cidalia. We hope that this sentence sends out a message of the impact that careless driving can have.”
Claire Newstead, an expert serious injury and road accident lawyer at Irwin Mitchell, representing the family said:
Expert Opinion
“This incident highlights the tragic and devastating consequences a lack of concentration and attention behind the wheel can have.
“Nothing is more important than your own safety and the safety of others on the roads. It is vital that people remember this when while driving as we see first-hand on a daily basis the impact careless driving has on people’s lives.”
